Life’s Journey To fulfilment Is Possible
This morning I met with an old friend, and we found ourselves reflecting on our personal journeys. Decades ago we felt broken and yearning. Yearning for wholeness, for connection and fulfilment. Today we both feel fairly satisfied and grateful for our paths.
This blog post was inspired by one of my mentors, who suggested to me (after my big sigh and complaint about being asked to identify, yet again, an ideal client for business niching) that my clients were yearning. Yearning for more to life, yearning for education and expansion, contact and connection, embodiment and grounding, and a kind of spiritual salvation.
This rings true in me. As a child I often sang that great anthem of yearning, ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ from the film The Wizard of Oz. As a young adult I searched out there in many countries, amongst spiritual teachers and teachings. I reached out to the mystery. I would often dance, arms outstretched, or arms raised up, hands upturned – pleading for what I knew was possible. At times, I prayed, wishing fervently for the things I knew were mine to manifest – a child, a book, a loving passionate relationship. These things are my dharma, my destiny.
I feel blessed and grateful, that despite the many ups and downs of life, I have managed to achieve these things. I knew, always, deep inside – without words, image or consciousness – I just knew.
At a certain point, I burned to fulfil these things, burned to become the teacher, author, healer and lover that I am today. I took myself intensively into inner work. I was on fire.
Not everyone’s process needs to take as long as mine and many of my contemporaries did. For us, it was a journey of many decades. Now, for sure, I’ve arrived somewhere. Not the journey’s end, but some substantial travel post. And I think that me and us, us lot who are now the teachers and leaders for new generations, have the capacity – and the global energy is also supportive – for rapid healing and transformational change.
Often when people ask me about my work, I’m not sure quite what to say… I can say that I’m a safe pair of hands. I can say that I make it up as I go along, meaning that I’m responding to the unique individual in front of me, drawing on a large toolkit developed over a long period of training and working time.
There is an energy that comes through me, that I’m now lucky enough to live, and share, that supports others wellbeing. I often wish I’d taken before and after pictures of clients, and students, at the start of a session or workshop, and at the end, after the work has finished. I’ve seen faces transformed from dull to shining, from closed to open, becoming more handsome and beautiful, as they are now more truly who they are.
I’m grateful to all of my teachers, therapists and friends over all these decades of self-discovery and healing. I’m glad for their good seeing of me. For their wise and careful interventions. We all stand on the shoulders of giants. I’m pleased and delighted to have become, substantially – in order to be able to inspire and guide you onwards, to who you too can substantially become. As others have said, ‘if you will it, it’s not a dream. Or in the words of the film, The Field of Dreams, ‘If you build it, they will come.’
Dreams are not daft. Impulses, hunches, insights, instincts urge you on, to fullest you. Not for your own sake only, but to take your rightful place in the jigsaw puzzle of life. To serve, delight, play and enjoy your experience – and to enrich the lives of others too.
May all beings be free from suffering. May all beings be well. You have a unique set of gifts and capabilities. Whether you are a theatre director, gardener, engineer or artist, whatever your unique skills set, may you manifest your heart’s desire and thrive.
